Yes. Ozone is made up of the oxygen we normally breathe (O₂) with an additional oxygen atom attached (O₃). When used in the body, ozone rapidly reacts and releases this extra oxygen atom, which produces its beneficial effects before converting back into oxygen. Because of this process, Dr. Koupal considers ozone therapy very safe for most patients. Exceptions include patients who are pregnant or have anemia, clotting disorders, or uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during ozone therapy. It’s a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can be applied directly to the treatment area as ozone gas or ozonated water, without cutting into tissue.
